Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ)

University

Established in Jakarta as a dedicated arts and design institute, IKJ’s Fashion Product Design & Costume program within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD) offers forward‑thinking fashion education grounded in design excellence, cultural context, and environmental responsibility. With its mission to shape creative professionals rooted in cultural identity and modern practices, IKJ prepares students to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia’s evolving fashion landscape.

Sustainability is deeply embedded in IKJ’s activities and learning environment. Since 2021, IKJ’s annual event Cikini Fashion Festival (CiFFest) has adopted the theme “Fashion Environmental”, serving as a platform for education, collaboration, and public programming that promotes eco-fashion awareness—from chemical safety to material reuse, zero‑waste thinking, and local industry innovation. CiFFest gathers academia, industry, designers, and communities to explore sustainable practices in fashion creation and consumption.

In addition, sustainable fashion is integrated into curricula and student projects. Research from UNJ indicates that sustainable design concepts—such as minimal pattern cutting, zero-waste layout, upcycling, and environmentally responsible design—have been informally introduced into IKJ’s fashion courses and creative studios for years, even when not explicitly named in the curriculum. Student handiwork includes upcycled garments, repurposed textiles, and innovative zero-waste collections, reflecting IKJ’s embrace of circular techniques.
