Sekar Kawung

Social Enterprise

Sekar Kawung is a social enterprise and foundation founded in 2015 by Chandra Kirana. It partners with indigenous artisan communities—such as those in Tuban (East Java), East Sumba, West Kalimantan, and Bali—to revive traditional weaving cultures while promoting sustainable fashion rooted in Indonesian biodiversity and cultural heritage. Unlike conventional fashion models, Sekar Kawung supports the entire local value chain—from cotton farming in Tuban to artisan spinning, natural-dye hand weaving, design collaborations, and eco-aware branding for urban consumers.

Sekar Kawung orchestrates true responsible textiles: they grow organic cotton using intercropping methods (like maize and mung beans), harvest and process fibers via local mechanized spinning, then collaborate with hand-weaving artisans to produce Tenun Gedog fabrics. Textile patterns and dyes are derived naturally, minimizing chemical inputs. The organization reinvests in biodiversity through tree planting, crop restoration, and community tourism initiatives, strengthening both eco-systems and rural economies. A circular loop is completed via fashion collaborations and sales platforms that offer provenance-tracked, artisanal fashion pieces to conscious consumers.
