who we are

We Are United by Shared Vision

Rantai Tekstil Lestari (RTL) is a not-for-profit alliance established in 2020 by nine pioneering organizations spanning Indonesia’s textile, garment, and fashion value chain — from raw material producers and manufacturers to global brands —alongside with two environmental non-profit organizations.

With support from Partnership ID, the founding members came together out of a shared concern for the industry’s future and a firm commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recognizing that a just, inclusive, and sustainable textile ecosystem can only be achieved through collaboration and action. Together, they built the foundation for RTL as Indonesia’s first multi-stakeholder platform dedicated exclusively to advancing textile sustainability.

our history

Founded by Industry Leaders,
Born in the Moment of Crisis

Early 2020

The Begining

Rantai Tekstil Lestari (RTL) was founded during a time of global disruption. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic shook industries worldwide, Indonesia’s textile and fashion sector faced significant uncertainty. Yet, within that crisis emerged a unique opportunity: to rebuild better, together.

RTL was born out of a collective awareness of the urgent need to transition towards sustainability—led by industry leaders spanning the entire textile value chain, from upstream fiber producers to downstream fashion brands, as well as research institutions, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups.

July 2020

Forum Rajut 1

RTL was began as a series of open online forums quickly evolved into a movement for systemic change. These discussions—called Forum Diskusi Rajut (Weaving Together)—provided a platform for actors across the sector to align visions, identify shared challenges, and co-create a new path forward.

In July 2020, Forum Rajut 1 was held and the founding leaders established trust and mutual understanding among them.

September 2020

Founding Partner Meeting

A series of meetings among the founding partners helped articulate the alliance’s core purpose. Discussions focused on creating a shared platform that reflects the needs and aspirations of actors across the value chain.

October 2020

Forum Rajut 2

This second forum reinforced long-term commitment to collaboration. Stakeholders collectively recognized the urgency of building an inclusive and sustainable ecosystem and began outlining pathways for future joint action.

November 2020

Vision & Mission Alignment

Three partner meetings were held to solidify RTL’s vision, mission, and key priorities. This moment became a turning point where the group transformed from informal discussions into a structured initiative.

December 2020

Forum Rajut 3

As the pandemic exposed the fragility of the industry, the third Rajut forum focused on identifying long-term strategies for resilience and sustainability. The group finalized the decision to establish RTL as a formal, independent organization.

September 9, 2021

RTL Officially Launched

RTL was officially launched as a registered entity. Since then, it has continued to act as a platform for collaboration—connecting businesses, policymakers, researchers, and communities—to shape a more sustainable future for Indonesia’s textile and fashion industries.
