Empowering MSMEs Through Sustainability

Rantai Tekstil Lestari (RTL) joined hands with the Islamic Fashion Institute and IKRA Indonesia to support the IKRA Bootcamp 2025, an initiative focused on empowering Indonesian Muslim fashion MSMEs (UMKM Fesyen) to thrive in the global market through sustainability and cultural heritage.

Representing RTL, board member Rizal Tanzil Rakhman delivered a session titled “Bisnis Fesyen Berkelanjutan di Era Global”, spotlighting the strategic importance of sustainable fashion as both a market opportunity and a moral imperative.

Key Messages from RTL’s Session

  • Sustainable fashion is no longer optional, but a necessity in today’s climate-challenged world. The fashion industry contributes to 10% of global emissions and generates 92 million tons of textile waste annually.

  • Indonesian MSMEs have a unique strength: cultural richness and community empowerment. Practices like traditional weaving and batik not only preserve heritage but also offer compelling sustainability stories that resonate globally.

  • Consumers are increasingly eco-conscious—over 70% of Indonesian internet users prefer sustainable brands and are willing to pay more.

  • RTL urged MSMEs to embrace circular business models, explore global certification and traceability tools, and practice authentic storytelling to build consumer trust and market competitiveness.

The session spotlighted Torajamelo as a leading example of sustainable MSME fashion. Their community-based approach to women’s empowerment and cultural preservation in rural Indonesia has earned international recognition, including the UN Women Indonesia WEPS Awards and Earth Company’s Impact Hero 2022 Finalist.

“Sustainability is not just about materials—it’s also about meaning. Through storytelling, local fashion businesses can communicate their social and environmental impact in a way that consumers feel proud to support.”

RTL’s participation aligns with its broader mission to connect and empower textile stakeholders across Indonesia to transition toward a just and circular economy. By supporting initiatives like IKRA Bootcamp, RTL hopes to inspire a new generation of sustainable entrepreneurs grounded in local wisdom and global relevance.
