Matahari
Retailer
Founded in 1958 and known as Indonesia’s first modern department store since 1972, Matahari Department Store (PT Matahari Department Store Tbk) now operates 143 outlets across almost 80 cities and supports an online presence through Matahari.com. As one of Indonesia’s most iconic retail brands, Matahari has long served the growing middle class with affordable fashion, beauty, and lifestyle products—sourced from over 600 international and local suppliers.
Matahari is advancing its ESG vision through notable sustainability initiatives. Since 2011, the company uses only cassava-derived biodegradable shopping bags, reducing plastic waste. A nationwide LED retrofit program across stores and logistics centers has cut lighting energy usage by 80%, saving over 7,000 GJ in electricity in 2023 alone. Their “Daur Ulang Bajumu” (Recycle Your Clothes) drop‑box program—launched in 2022 in collaboration with Asia Pacific Rayon—collects secondhand denim in-store and directs garments to recycling, reducing landfill waste and encouraging circular reuse. More than 26 tonnes of waste were diverted through this initiative.
On the social front, Matahari continuously strengthens its Diffable Friend Program by employing persons with disabilities and providing inclusive support. Career development is supported through the company’s MILEA learning platform, and community development programs—like school library renovations, clothing donations, and literacy efforts—are run across regions.
