Moving to Circular Fashion

An online workshop hosted by the European Union, the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN)

in support of the implementation of the G20 Resource Efficiency Dialogue Roadmap 2021-2023

12 July 2022, 12:00 – 16:00 CEST (UCT+2) using Webex

Clothing production has doubled in the last 15 years. The global fashion sector employs 60 million people with an annual turnover of more than 2 trillion euros, uses 215 trillion litres of water per year and produces annual greenhouse emissions of more than 2.1 billion tons (2018), equalling 4% of the global total.

This workshop explores which steps can economically support the fashion sector, whilst reducing its environmental and social impacts. Consumers, businesses and legislators in markets around the world are increasingly demanding products with lower environmental impact that predominantly burden developing countries.

  • This virtual workshop will host speakers from business, government and collaborative initiatives sharing their analysis and perspectives.
  • It aims to support exchange, understanding and collaboration between policy makers and key stakeholders from G20 and key producer countries (particularly in South-East Asia), to develop a rewarding circular economy for fashion, yet is open to a wider audience.

One approach discussed in a G20 Resource Efficiency Dialogue workshop hosted by the Italian G20 Presidency in June 2021 is ‘Circular Fashion’ – a shift by producers and consumers in global fashion value chains to products which retain their value for longer, and so reduce waste, climate emissions and environmental burden – with products more able to be: used more times; resold; repaired or remanufactured more easily; and economically recycled at the end of their life.

  • This workshop will discuss the changing consumer market for circular fashion– including changes driven by significant new EU policy -, the beneficial responses producers can take, and the practical steps in international co-operation which could support those.
  • It builds on the discussions of the June 2021 G20 workshop which pointed to the need for international co-operation to improve:
    • Communication of environmental characteristics of production and products through chain of buyers from suppliers to retailers to customers and to recyclers.
    • Forms of public-private co-operation which support transition and innovation all along the global fashion value chain.

Policies for Circular Product Design

An online workshop hosted by
the European Union and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN)

in support of the implementation of the G20 Resource Efficiency Dialogue Roadmap 2021-2023

13 July 2022, 12:00 – 16:00 CEST (UCT+2) using Webex

Consumers, businesses and legislators in markets around the world increasingly demand products with lower environmental impact.  Yet 80% of the environmental impact of final products depends on their design.

This workshop explores how policy makers can support redesign of products to lower their environmental impact over their whole lifetime by promoting design of products for circularity.

  • ‘Circular product design’ means creating products which retain their value for longer, and so reduce waste, climate emissions and environmental burden – with products more able to be: used more times; resold; repaired or remanufactured more easily; and economically recycled at the end of their life.

This workshop, to be held virtually, will explore:

  • How circular product design can reduce serious global and regional environmental, economic and social problems, whilst saving costs.
  • What influences the design of products.
  • Which policy frameworks G20 members are currently using to support improved product design for circularity, including an update on major new EU legislation.
  • Which forms of global co-operation could support moves to circular design?

The workshop will host speakers from around the world sharing their analysis and business perspectives.
