RTL at Green Economy Expo 2024: Shaping the Future of Textile Circularity in Indonesia

Jakarta, July 3, 2024 – Rantai Tekstil Lestari (RTL) participated in the panel discussion “Circular Talks: The Future of Textile Circularity in Indonesia” at the Green Economy Expo 2024, held at Jakarta Convention Center. RTL Chair, Basrie Kamba, joined government representatives, industry leaders, and sustainability advocates to explore textile industry trends, challenges, and opportunities within Indonesia’s green economic transformation.

Why Textile Circularity Matters at Green Economy Expo 2024

Organized by Bappenas (the Ministry of National Development Planning), the Green Economy Expo 2024 aimed to drive Indonesia’s transition toward a green and circular economy, aligning with its Golden Vision 2045—a pathway to become a sovereign, advanced, and sustainable nation,

As part of the expo, Bappenas emphasized  Indonesia’s Circular Economy Roadmap and National Action Plan, launched in 2023, spotlighting five priority sectors—textiles, along with food, electronics, plastic packaging, and construction—where circular approaches can deliver significant economic and environmental gains.

The roadmap underscores the urgency of addressing textile waste, estimated at around 2.3 million tons per year in Indonesia, projected to surge 70% without intervention. In response, Bappenas has partnered with entities like GGGI Indonesia, Bandung’s STTT, and PT Daur Langkah Bersama (Pable) under the Green Transition Investment Program (GTIP), backed by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to build a circular textile ecosystem—encompassing waste management, financial mechanisms, and capacity building.

During the session, panelists—among them RTL’s Basrie Kamba—delved into strategies critical for circular transition in textiles, such as:

  • Building circular supply chains that minimize waste and enhance resource efficiency.

  • Managing and redirecting textile waste into new sustainable streams.

  • Creating green jobs and providing economic opportunities rooted in circular practices.

  • Strengthening cross-sector collaboration among government, industry, academia, and civil society to foster system-wide transformation.

Basrie Kamba also emphasized pivotal lessons drawn from the Renewcell bankruptcy case, demonstrating how even the most advanced recycling ventures can fail without aligned support from government, manufacturers, brands, and consumers.

By joining this dialogue, RTL reaffirmed its commitment to lead Indonesia’s sustainable textile transformation. RTL’s participation aligns with national priorities, enabling the sector to evolve from linear production models to circular, resilient, and inclusive systems.
